Cristiano Ronaldo is confident Real Madrid can add to their Super Cup success

Cristiano Ronaldo expects English clubs to challenge for European glory this season - but still believes Real Madrid will end up making Champions League history.

Ronaldo was back in the goal-scoring groove on Tuesday night after an injury-hit World Cup for Portugal, scoring twice in the 2-0 Super Cup victory over Spanish rivals Sevilla in Cardiff.
The reigning world player of the year was named the official man of the match by his former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson and seems set for another trophy-laden campaign.

"Madrid are going to be the first team," Ronaldo replied when asked if Real could make Champions League history by retaining the title.
"I hope so. Maybe we have the potential to be the best but I believe the players that Real Madrid have bought this season - James (Rodriguez), (Toni) Kroos and (Keylor) Navas - are going to give more support to the team and more quality.
"I'm very happy with the quality that we have in the squad, so it's fantastic and we are going to try and win all the trophies."
England's Champions League challenge will be spearheaded by Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea while Arsenal will be aiming to overcome Besiktas, of Turkey, in the play-off round to join them in the group stages.

Manchester United 2-1 Valencia

Louis Van Gaal is determined to be his own man at Manchester United, but this is one habit he will not mind borrowing from Sir Alex Ferguson.
Late goals were a hallmark of Ferguson’s teams and how fitting that Van Gaal’s first appearance as United manager at Old Trafford should end with a stoppage-time winner from under-fire midfielder Marouane Fellaini.
It meant that the Dutchman maintained his winning start as United boss, adding Valencia to a list of beaten opponents that includes Real Madrid, Roma, Inter Milan and Liverpool shirt.

Typically, he was still far from happy.
It was, Van Gaal acknowledged, United’s ‘worst game’ under him. They were pedestrian at times and Wayne Rooney missed a penalty.
On this evidence, he still has a significant amount of work on his hands. On Saturday lunchtime another team in white will line up against United ... and this side will have to raise their game to beat Swansea City.
‘We made a lot of wrong choices, wrong passes and we didn’t press too much,’ said Van Gaal afterwards. ‘We have to choose better the right time to pass the ball. We haven’t done that and that is a pity.
‘It’s a big pressure because the fans expect a lot, but you cannot change everything in three or four weeks and the players cannot change either.
‘We have to wait and see and develop and we need time, but we have won every game up to now and that’s fantastic when you see our opponents.’
That Fellaini should be the man to score the winner was somewhat poetic.

MLS undoubtedly will give Donovan an epic sendoff in the coming months

23:35 Posted by Unknown , , , No comments

Together, the pair led the Galaxy to consecutive MLS Cups in 2011 and 2012 and gave the rest of the league a blueprint to follow for blending premier European talent seamlessly. Players like Thierry Henry, Jermain Defoe, David Villa and Frank Lampard have followed in Beckham’s wake. Without Donovan’s support, who knows what the MLS landscape would look like now?
He had more international goals  and assists  than any player in U.S. soccer history. None was more breathtaking than the injury-time strike against Algeria in the 2010 World Cup. With that goal, the U.S. went from out of its group into the second round, and Donovan went from great player to living legend.
It would be his last great World Cup memory. The U.S. lost its next match to Ghana, and Donovan was cut from Jurgen Klinsmann’s 2014 roster. Donovan seemed at odds with Klinsmann in recent years. A three-month sabbatical from soccer in 2013 for burnout and mental fatigue didn’t help matters.
Despite being denied the World Cup sendoff he deserved, Donovan has not lost his flair for the dramatic – and the goal.
On Wednesday night, the 32-year-old shredded the Bayern Munich defense for 23 minutes in the MLS All-Star Game, hitting the game-winning goal with his final touch of the match. As Donovan jogged off the pitch in the 70th minute, he received a standing ovation from a crowd that was unaware this would be the last time they would see him in an All-Star setting.
MLS undoubtedly will give Donovan an epic sendoff in the coming months, as the season lurches toward the playoffs. The league will be hard pressed to do Donovan’s career justice. How do you pay tribute to someone who has done so much for the sport?
Donovan’s departure leaves a vacancy that will not be soon filled, if at all.

David Rudisha is beaten by Nijel Amos in 800m final at Commonwealth Games

Nijel Amos and David Rudisha - David Rudisha is beaten by Nijel Amos in 800m final at the Commonwealth Games as Hampden Park witnesses huge shockThe head-on shot was bizarre. David Rudisha: tall, striding, the epitome of calm. Next to him Nijel Amos: arms swinging wildly, legs overreaching, muscles tensing.
That single image with 10 metres remaining appeared to reveal so much. In fact it was full of deceit. The king of middle-distance running was in trouble and Amos was about to pull off the biggest upset Hampden Park had seen this week.
This was not what the 50,000 spectators had expected to see. Rudisha is not just an Olympic champion or a world record holder. He is the greatest 800m runner in history.
The Kenyan’s victory at London 2012 was described as “the most extraordinary piece of running I have ever seen,” by double Olympic champion Lord Coe.

Before he took his seat on the bench Wednesday night for his first game as the new manager of Manchester United, Louis van Gaal had already made an impact on the club in England.

Van Gaal, who guided the Netherlands to third place in this year’s World Cup, demanded last week that the two main practice fields at United’s training center be resurfaced with the same kind of turf used at the club’s stadium, Old Trafford. The fields are supposed to be ready in five weeks.

Van Gaal plans more substantive, revolutionary changes to the team, which is coming off its worst season since the creation of the Premier League in 1992, and his biggest change of all made its debut Wednesday night in stunning fashion. United began its tour of the United States with a 7-0 rout of Major League Soccer’s Los Angeles Galaxy in front of 86,432 at the Rose Bowl.

United took the field for van Gaal’s first game in a 3-4-1-2 formation, a major deviation from the 4-3-3 identified so closely with United for decades.

The most ridiculous things fans have printed on shirts

The most ridiculous things fans have printed on shirtsOne grandmother was left red-faced after ordering an £80 Manchester United shirt with the name 'Roony' printed on the back, making an embarrassing mistake in the process. Her son, for whom it was a 47th birthday gift, emailed her to say: "Thanks Mum, it’s fabulous – but I can’t wear it!"

Sometimes football fans - or indeed their relatives - get it horribly, horribly wrong. And that's just in the few minutes it takes to spoil a perfectly decent, and expensive, replica shirt by getting something absurd printed across the back of it.

Football - McInnes remains confident

Football - McInnes remains confidentThe Dons' reward for their memorable win over Groningen in Holland last week is a tie against a side that were in the Champions League group stages last season.
The Basque club have since strengthened with the signing of former Celtic target Alfred Finnbogason, who was the top goalscorer in Holland last season with Heerenveen.
But McInnes believed in his team ahead of their trip to Holland last week, and he will do so again on Thursday night. And his optimism is further fuelled by the fact his players have had the benefit of four competitive games, having beaten Daugava Riga 8-0 in the first qualifying round, while Sociedad open their season against the Dons.
McInnes, quoted by his club's official website, said: "Real Sociedad is a strong name in European football and I think La Liga is regarded, by most, as the best league in Europe.

Tottenham scores late goal to edge Toronto FC 3-2

TORONTO (AP) — Andros Townsend scored in the 85th minute to give Tottenham a 3-2 victory over Toronto FC on Wednesday night, spoiling Toronto striker Jermain Defoe's first game against his old English team.
Andrew Wiedeman and Canadian teenager Jordan Hamilton had second-half goals to pull Toronto even before a sellout crowd of 22,591. But Lewis Holtby found Townsend for a shot that curled past Quillan Roberts.
Argentina's Erik Lamela scored twice for Tottenham in the first half.

Anthony Johnson takes step forward on road to redemption by beating Antonio Rogerio Nogueira

SAN JOSE, Calif. – Just over two years ago, Anthony "Rumble" Johnson lashed out at his critics over Facebook, after he missed weight for a middleweight bout with Vitor Belfort by an astonishing 11 pounds.
"I don't give a [expletive]," Johnson said in a long-since-deleted post. "I'm laughing at you all."
Johnson went on to lose in the first round to Belfort in what was assumed to be the last anyone would ever see of the Dublin, Ga., native.
Contrast that to the words that came out of Johnson's mouth Saturday night in the Octagon at the SAP Center, after he needed just 44 seconds to score a vicious TKO victory over veteran Antonio Rogerio Nogueira in the co-feature bout of UFC on FOX 12.
